Sir, – The concern of local seaweed harvesters for their traditional rights and need for individual licences (“The seaweed harvesting battle on Ireland’s west coast”, Environment, February 14th) reminded me of how in 1930/1940s on Trawbreaga Bay shoreline, near Malin Head, Co Donegal, farmers had a section each (not unlike the bogs) for harvesting seaweed. These did not necessarily adjoin their farms.
One year my grandfather returned with his horse and cart, having let the seaweed accumulate for a number of years. At first, he was unsure of his plot but thankfully the horse knew. – Yours, etc,
