Sir , – John Wilson´s articles are not really written for a wine enthusiast like me. I am looking for affordable wines, not bottles at ridiculous prices. His four bottles this week had an average cost of €31.50.
As a member of a prominent wine club, who goes on expeditions abroad to sample interesting wines, my average purchase is between €14 and €17 a bottle.
A wine would have to be really special for me (and many of my fellow members) to exceed €20, and, on the rare occasions when I have splashed out more than €30, I have concluded that it was a waste of money. – Yours, etc,
