Sir, – Like Quentin Fottrell (“I have no complaints about the Irish summer weather”, Life & Style, August 24th), I too emigrated to the US for the shiny skyscrapers and the greenback. But while blue skies didn’t factor in my decision to leave in 2016, they have been fundamental to my not returning.
As my mother says, five years in the States ruined me, and a three-year flirtation with London was enough to make the annual number of sunshine hours a key consideration when my wife and I were deciding where to live long term.
We ended up in the French Alps, and while there’s plenty I miss about home, it’ll take some pulling to outweigh consistently blue skies and countless bottles of factor 50. – Is mise,

Sir, – Does anyone in the southeast of the country know of a way to package up some sun and courier it to the desperately needy here in the west and northwest?
It would be a very neighbourly gesture.
We may have seen a blue moon but we’re blue in the face hoping to see some sun.
Same-day delivery would be immensely appreciated. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Anyone thinking of putting away the barbecue should stall just a little longer.
The schools are due to reopen, at which time the weather always improves. – Yours, etc,
