A chara – Paul Gillespie does those who defend Ukraine’s right to resist a war of unbridled aggression and to maintain its national sovereignty a gross disservice when he refers to them as “war supporters” abusing those like himself who promote “peace” (“Ukraine incursion into Russia could make it easier to talk about peace negotiations”, Opinion & Analysis, August 17th).
His consistent version of what such a “peace” should look like has been for Ukraine to accept the loss of a fifth of its territory as well as parts of provinces that Russia does not currently control.
Such a “peace” would leave Ukraine defenceless by being excluded from future Nato membership which long-standing neutrals Sweden and Finland have scrambled to join following the invasion in February 2022.
It is foolhardy to imagine that any “peace” that rewards modern Russian imperialism would be anything other than unjust, temporary and only encouragement for ongoing hostility to what might remain of Ukraine and beyond. – Is mise,
