Sir, – Paul Griffin (Letters, August 22nd) maintains that city status is dependent on the location having a cathedral. In the UK, city status is bestowed by way of letters patent or royal charter without regard to cathedrals. Here, city status is dependent on an amendment of the local government statutes, irrespective of the presence of a cathedral. So there’s no need to rush out and build an expensive cathedral in Tallaght.
My late father, back in the 1960s, used to joke that cities have escalators, and the Square in Tallaght meets that criterion. – Yours, etc,
