Younger citizens deserve credit

Sir, – Kudos to Finn McRedmond for her defence of the work ethic of young people (Opinion & Analysis, September 8th).

Having taught most of my adult life and been principal in two secondary schools, I can only commend the work ethic and common decency of young people. I know that they work harder and have more concern for the environment and others than I had at their age.

They have also been bequeathed, by my generation, the remnants of a banking crisis, a move to globalisation and a reversion to nationalism, a major war and the resulting energy crisis. I am also glad that the digital fingerprint of social media wasn’t around, in my day, to map my every (and there were some) teenage transgression!

The young people of this island are to be commended for their resilience, propriety and perseverance.

When I hear people of my peer group censuring young people, it reminds me of one of my professors at the University of London who was fond of stating, “Nostalgia and amnesia are bedfellows”. – Yours, etc,

ENDA CULLEN,

Armagh.
