Dublin had become like the Roman arenas, Judge Sean Delap said when he heard how a Baldoyle youth had used a stolen car to entertain his friends and terrorise bystanders.

Anthony Matthews (17), of Newgrove Estate, Baldoyle, pleaded guilty to using a stolen car, dangerous driving and having no insurance on February 3rd.

"It's a public display of blackguardism ... It's like the chariots in the Roman arena," said Judge Delap as he sentenced Matthews to two years' detention and disqualified him for five years.
