Gardai in Waterford arrested a 16-year-old yesterday in connection with an attack in the city centre on an 80-year-old Argentinian tourist.
The woman required hospital treatment after she was set upon by three youths around 6 p.m. on Thursday. Her handbag was taken, but yesterday gardai recovered most of its contents.
Supt Michael McGarry said the incident was a "shameful attack" on an elderly visitor to the city. The woman had sought directions to a chemist from the three teenagers after leaving her hotel on the quay.
"They lured her into a side street, attacked her and stole her bag. She was knocked to the ground and received facial injuries," he said. The woman, who was "shocked and traumatised", was taken to hospital where she was treated but not detained overnight.
She rejoined her party and travelled yesterday to Dublin, where the recovered items from her bag were to be returned to her last night.
Supt McGarry said the youth was being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Gardai had identified two others who were being sought in connection with the attack.
