The World Trade Organisation ruled today that the European Union applied a moratorium on approving genetically modified foods and crops (GMOs) in violation of trade rules, diplomats said.
In a case being closely watched for its possible impact on global trade in GMOs, the Geneva-based trade body also ruled that six individual states, amongst them France and Austria, had also broken the rules in applying their own bans on marketing and importing GMOs, they added.
The United States, Canada and Argentina brought the WTO complaint against the EU.
