Defending champion Tiger Woods staggered through a disastrous opening round at the U.S. PGA championship today, posting a three-over 73 that left him tied for 79th -- seven shots off the pace.
Ireland’s representatives enjoyed mixed fortunes. Last week’s Wales Open winner, Paul McGinley, carded a two-under 68 to lie two shots off the lead, whilst Darren Clarke lies a further five strokes back after shooting a 73. Padraig Harrington lies another two strokes back after only managing a five over par 75.
Woods struggled mightily with his putter and played several loose shots in his tour of the 7,213-yard Highlands Course at Atlanta Athletic Club.
The world number one posted a pair of double bogeys along the way.
