A woman arrested in the Garda investigation into the fatal stabbing of a young Co Galway man was tonight released without charge.

Kieran Cunningham was attacked just minutes after leaving a nightclub in the heart of the city in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The 20-year-old was rushed to University College Hospital Galway with serious wounds but died a short time later.

The woman, who is in her 20s, was arrested in Galway yesterday after detectives released CCTV footage of a man and a woman they believed might be in a position to help with the investigation.

Gardaí said a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Investigating officers, who conducted a number of searches in the city, have released an additional photograph of the same man who they want to question.

He is aged in his mid-20s, around six foot tall with close cut dark hair. He was wearing a blue coloured t-shirt with a white trim on the neck and sleeves and bearing the logo 'Sao Paulo 09' and stonewashed jeans.

Mr Cunningham, a supermarket deli worker from Slievefinn, near Claregalway, was the second oldest child in a family of three.

He was found with multiple wounds in the Williamsgate Street area of the city at about 2.20am.

Gardai said he had been in the nearby Karma nightclub about 10 minutes before the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Galway Garda station on 091 - 538000.
