Health board excludes press

Members of the Southern Health Board have voted by a majority of one to conduct much of their business behind closed doors, writes Anne Lucey.

Medical representatives, supported by a number of Cork Fianna Fáil councillors, expressed fears about inflammatory reporting where the press was allowed into committee meetings.

These closed meetings of the general hospitals and psychiatric services committees discuss the state of buildings and services and make suggestions about the disposal of property.

"If the board doesn't exist from July, how is the media to access the different aspects of the board's business, how now are the public to know what's going on," Cllr Brian Bermingham (FG) asked in moving his motion that the press should be invited to all meetings.

Mr George Mullan, medical consultant, said that there were a lot of "little spats" at the meetings and these would be "blown out of all proportion" if the press was allowed in.
