A woman lost her life yesterday afternoon after she slipped and fell a couple of hundred feet into the water at a scenic area in Bere Island, Co Cork.

The woman, who has been named locally as Margaret Sullivan, owns a holiday home on the island which she visits with her husband at weekends. She was out walking when she lost her footing and fell into the water.

Ms Sullivan, who is in her late 50s/early 60s, fell into the water at Bird Island off Bere Island. She went out for a walk in the afternoon after lunch and when she failed to return, her husband became concerned and raised the alarm.

Ms Sullivan’s body was recovered from the water shortly after 5pm yesterday. The dead woman is from Ballylickey, Co Cork, but her husband is a native of Bere Island. The couple have one son.
