John F. Kennedy was reluctant to fly into Martha's Vineyard airport but attempted it because his wife insisted, a US newspaper reported yesterday. A New York Post columnist, Cindy Adams, said Mr Kennedy told a friend: "I'm really not that experienced a pilot."

Ms Adams said Mr Kennedy told a biographer, David Heymann, last week that he did not feel secure about Martha's Vineyard airport and did not want to fly there. However, he felt he had to do it because his wife insisted he drop off her sister while they were en route to his cousin's wedding in Hyannisport.

Mr Kennedy said, according to Mr Heymann: "I don't even want to go to Martha's Vineyard. I'm flying my own plane and my wife doesn't like flying with me. And now I have to go to Martha's Vineyard as well as Hyannis."
