The incidence of whooping cough has almost doubled in the last year, according to Department of Health figures. In the 11 months from January to November 28th, 1997, there were 446 recorded cases, compared with 226 in the same period of 1996.

A spokeswoman for the Department said the Minister for Health, Mr Cowen, had asked public health specialists in each of the health boards to document the age group and vaccine status for each case arising between September and December 1997. "When this information is received the Department will evaluate it and decide on appropriate action."
