The future of England's national stadium will finally be revealed on Wednesday, ending three years of delays and blunders by sports officials.
Wembley, Birmingham and Coventry all tabled bids to host a new stadium, but newspaper reports point to a redevelopment of Wembley, the historic home of the English soccer, as the chosen option.
Football Association (FA) spokesman Paul Newman said: "There will be an announcement about the National Stadium project on Wednesday. In the meantime, there will be no comment by any of the parties involved".
Wembley was expected to form an important part of bids for the 2006 World Cup finals, subsequently awarded to Germany, and the 2012 Olympic Games.
The proposed new stadium was first ruled out as a track-and-field venue but then banks refused to lend money for its refurbishment.
London has yet to say whether it will make a bid for the 2012 Olympics after the problems. A decision on the venue is not due until 2005.
