Three Waterford local authorities have signed a two-year deal with electricity provider Energia worth approximately €3.6 million.
The councils; Waterford City Council, County Council and Dungarvan Town Council, have purchased over 20GWh (gigawatt hours) of power from Energia.
In a statement Energia the deal would led to a reductions in the county’s carbon footprint of up to 10,700 tonnes each year.
Mayor of Waterford Cllr Jack Walsh said: “The procurement of green energy by the local authorities of Waterford is a positive step in the development of a sustainable green economy and reduces the need on imported fossil fuels.”
