The National Safety Council has welcomed a drop in road deaths compared with previous years but has warned that some drivers are ignoring warnings about speed, drink-driving and wearing seatbelts. The council's chief executive, Mr Pat Costello, singled out a "shamefully low" 57 per cent for driver compliance with wearing seatbelts and pointed out that the number of over-the-limit blood-alcohol samples was rising.
