An 18lb unexploded artillery shell, believed to date from the War of Independence, was found today in a small laneway in Killiney, Co Dublin.

The shell, which was described as "quite dangerous" was brought by army disposal experts this afternoon to the Defence Forces’ firing range at Kilbride, Co Wicklow to be disarmed by controlled explosion.

Army spokesman Mr Paul Connors told ireland.comthe shell was found by a lady out walking in the quiet laneway at about noon today, but that it was "likely that kids pulled it out" into the middle of the road.

He said the Defence Forces were concerned by this as shells such as the one found today are "quite volatile when exposed to the elements" and are "highly explosive".

He added that the army takes such discoveries "very, very seriously".
