French Internet provider Wanadoo has trimmed its first-half losses following a surge in customers requiring faster access to the Web.

The France Telecom unit posted a loss of €39 million, compared with a €102 million loss in the same period a year ago.

Wanadoo has made a number of acquisitions, including Freeserve in the UK. and Indice Multimedia and Eresmas in Spain.

The company has about 7.8 million subscribers in six countries, including 1 million from Eresmas.

Chairman and Nicolas Dufourcq said that he did not expect any further large acquisitions in the near future.

"The integration of Eresmas is a big job."

Wanadoo said it expects to consolidate Eresmas in its accounts in the fourth quarter of this year and said it won't have a "significant impact'' on the company's 2002 earnings.
