Wales, Dr Rowan Williams has been named as the new Archbishop of Canterbury and spiritual leader of the world's 70 million Anglicans.

Dr Williams, an outspoken radical who has often criticised Mr Tony Blair's government and backs women bishops and gay clergy, will replace the incumbent Dr George Carey who is scheduled to retire in October after 11 years in the job.

Dr Williams was born in Wales in 1950 and became Oxford University's youngest theology professor at the age of 36. He was enthroned as Bishop of Monmouth in 1992 and elected Archbishop of Wales in 2000.
