An Army bomb disposal team were called to deal with what a spokesman described as a viable improvised explosive device in Roscrea, Co Tipperary early this morning.
The Defence Forces sent the team to an estate in the Grange area of the town at 2.45am following a request from gardaí.
A number of homes had to be evacuated during the operation.
The device was found near a vehicle. A controlled explosion was carried out and the scene was declared safe at 4.40am.

A Defence Forces spokesman said it was the 70th callout for far this year and the 22nd viable device to be discovered.
