Police in the North have described the suspicious object discovered in Co Derry last night as a "viable pipe bomb".

Police in the North have described the suspicious object discovered in Co Derry last night as a "viable pipe bomb".

The discovery led to a security alert in the Sandy Braes area of Magherafelt shortly before midnight. The bomb was discovered outside a house in Sandy Braes.

A number of homes were evacuated and police and a British army bomb disposal team were called to the scene.

A second suspicious object was found later today in the Loopland Gardens area of East Belfast.

Police and ATO are at the scene and a number of homes have been evacuated.
