Vatican City - The Roman Catholic Church said yesterday it had reached broad agreement with Lutherans on theological issues leading to the Reformation, but more dialogue was needed to end a 450-year-old dispute dividing them.

Responding to a landmark statement last week by the Lutheran World Federation, the Vatican said most of the mutual condemnations between Catholics and Lutherans levelled in the 16th century "no longer applied", but could not be forgotten.
