London - A controversial and futuristic design for an extension to London's Victoria and Albert Museum, described by one critic as a "spiral of crumpled boxes", has been approved by planning officials.

Pundits had predicted that the design, by the Berlin architect Daniel Libeskind, called "The Spiral", would be refused planning permission.
