Pakistan's president and the US ambassador today discussed the possible extradition to the United States of the suspected mastermind of the kidnap of murdered American reporter Daniel Pearl, a US spokesman said.

The meeting comes a day after US President George W. Bush said Washington wanted to put the British-born Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh on trial in the United States and could use a colonial era treaty to extradite the Islamic radical.

"The ambassador thanked the president for the ongoing police cooperation and further movement on the Pearl case", a US embassy spokesman said in Islamabad.

The other subject that was raised was the question of extradition, the spokesman said, adding there are no details.

Asked if Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf expressed support for extradition, the spokesman said: "This is an ongoing investigation. There is not a whole lot we can say on this."

Soon after Mr Musharraf's meeting with ambassador Ms Wendy Chamberlin, Sheikh Omar appeared in a Karachi court under heavy security for formal identification by a Pakistani reporter as the man he introduced to Mr Pearl shortly before the Wall Street Journalreporter disappeared on January 23rd in Karachi.

A police source said the witness was an Islamabad-based journalist who briefly assisted Mr Pearl on a story about possible links between Pakistani Islamic radicals and Osama bin Laden.
