A major US medical centre group has confirmed it has acquired a majority stake in the Beacon Hospital in south Dublin, committing €68 million in direct investment and loan guarantees.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC), said today it had taken majority ownership of the private hospital, which has been renamed UPMC Beacon Hospital. It becomes a part of the non-profit UPMC’s 20-hospital network.

UMPC, a €5.5 billion global group, began managing the Dublin hospital in 2008 and acquires two-thirds of it under today's deal.

The hospital’s chief executive Joel Yuhas said: “Our plans for significant expansion of UPMC Beacon Hospital will free up resources and increase capacity in the public health system for the benefit of patients.”
