ROME - A consignment of food aid donated by the US government has arrived in North Korea in response to a UN World Food Programme appeal to help the country to avoid famine.

The Rome-based agency said the US vessel Galveston Bay, chartered by the WFP, had docked at the port of Nampo, south-west of the capital, Pyongyang, on Wednesday with 8,500 tonnes of maize and 4,992 tonnes of corn soya blend. It added that a second vessel with canned meat and around 16,000 tonnes of food grains was due to arrive at Nampo on May 19th.
