University teachers vote to back work stoppage

University teachers have voted in favour of joining the Ictu organised national work stoppage on March 30th.

The Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT) said that its members had backed the one-day work stoppage in a ballot which showed a margin of 67.7 per cent in favour of the action.

IFUT’s general secretary Mike Jennings said the ballot represented “the reluctant determination of IFUT members to register the strongest possible protest against the Government’s handling of the economic crisis”.

"This ballot is a clear message to the Government from university staff. It says we will take our share of the pain but only in the context of a National Agreement which is fair to all," he added.
