Record-breaking goalscorer Ruud van Nistelrooy helped Manchester United hit the top of the Barclaycard Premiership via their eighth win in a row, away to luckless Southampton today.

Saints saw striker James Beattie carried off to hospital with a suspected broken leg after he had headed them into a third-minute lead.

Van Nistelrooy took only six more minutes to level matters - and after Saints twice struck the woodwork a David Beckham free-kick and second-half strike from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wrapped up the points.
