Monrovia - The President of Liberia, Mr Charles Taylor, who helped negotiate the release of 139 UN peacekeepers held by rebels in Sierra Leone, said yesterday that 30 to 40 of the freed peacekeepers had bullet wounds.

Mr Taylor said the peacekeepers sustained their wounds in a clash with rebels before their capture, following a dispute over disarmament under a 1999 peace deal. "Between 30 and 40 of the personnel are wounded. Some are in a serious condition," Mr Taylor said. Rebels still hold a further 347 hostage.
