Two dissident republican prisoners have been assaulted inside Northern Ireland's high-security Maghaberry Prison, a spokesman for the Prison Service has confirmed.

The attack reported occurred yesterday when the two male prisoners were attacked by seven loyalist inmates at Bann House in the Co Down jail.

One of the men who was assaulted suffered a head wound while his companion suffered bruising.

The spokesman said there was no evidence to support claims at one of the assailants was armed with a handgun but added that the "prison service is conducting a full search of Bann House".

Republican and loyalist prisoners have recently been seeking segregation within the jail.
