Gardai are continuing to question two men this morning after the discovery of two million smuggled cigarettes in Co Cavan last night.

Two other men were released without charge early this morning, a Garda spokeswoman said.

Officers from Monaghan, backed up by member of the armed Emergency Response Unit raided a retail unit in Kingscourt, Co Cavan yesterday evening and found the cigarettes.

Four men, believed to be from Northern Ireland, were arrested and held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Bailieborogh and Carrickmacross Garda stations.

Gardai say the haul is not believed to be directly related to the hijacking of a lorry just north of the Border on Monday morning. The truck contained 3.3 million cigarettes which are still missing after the incident on the main Dublin-Belfast road.
