Israeli troops shot dead two Palestinian gunmen who tried to enter a kibbutz in southern Israel near the border with the Gaza Strip overnight.

The Israeli army said the gunmen threw grenades at soldiers who confronted them near Kibbutz Kissufim, a collective farm near the Gaza border.

The troops killed one gunman in an initial exchange of fire and later shot dead the other after a chase. Two soldiers, including a colonel, were slightly hurt.

The militant Islamic Jihad group said the gunmen were from its Jerusalem Brigades.
