A man in his early 20s was last night recovering from gunshot wounds after a second shooting in a Limerick housing estate in less than 48 hours, Kathryn Hayes in Limerick.
It is understood the same shotgun may have been used in both attacks.
Mr Wayne Waters was shot on Saturday afternoon when he was walking through the College Avenue area of Moyross - a large council estate on the north side of Limerick city.
The victim made his way to a house in the nearby Cliodhna Park area, but was followed by the gunman who fired several more shots.
According to gardaí, Mr Waters was shot in the back and legs a number of times.
He was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital, where his condition was described last night as "comfortable".
It is understood the attack on Mr Waters is linked to another shooting in Moyross, in which a 30-year-old man was critically injured.
Mr Joseph "Dodo" McCarthy was shot in the chest when two gunmen forced their way into a house in Craeval Park, shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday last.
Mr McCarthy was in a critical condition in Limerick Regional Hospital, but last night his condition was described as "ill but stable".
Investigating gardaí are now exploring the possibility that the shotgun used in Saturday's shooting was the same weapon used in the attack on Mr McCarthy.
Two men, aged (18) and (23), were last night still being questioned by gardaí in relation to Saturday's shooting.
