Two men die from contaminated heroin substitute

A bad batch of the heroin substitute physeptone could be linked to the deaths of two young men, gardai said tonight.

A bad batch of the heroin substitute physeptone could be linked to the deaths of two young men, gardai said tonight.

Gardai said the men - both known to be drug addicts - died in Arklow, Co, Wicklow today.

This morning a 20-year-old was found dead in a house in the town, while a 23-year-old died in hospital in the early hours of this morning.

Gardai said they were investigating the possibility that poisonous heroin or physeptone could be in circulation in the area.

Deputy State Pathologist Marie Cassidy was due to carry out post-mortem examinations on the bodies of the men.
