The PSNI have arrested two men in connection with the murder of John Mongan in Belfast last year.

Mr Mongan (30) was hacked and beaten with a hatchet and baseball bat at his west Belfast home last February in front of his heavily pregnant wife.

The two men, aged 42 and 45, were arrested in Co Fermanagh this morning on suspicion of assisting offenders. They are being questioned at separate locations by detectives.

Two men and a teenager were charged late last year with murdering Mr Mongan.

Meanwhile, three people were arrested today over a gun attack on the west belfast home of Mr Mongan's mother-in-law, Bridget Mongan.

The 55-year-old woman and her 12 -year-old granddaughter needed hospital treatment for shock following the gun attack.

Bridget Mongan was in the kitchen at the back of her home when a black Audi pulled up outside the front door and several shots were fired through the living room window.

She said she had been attacked several times since the murder of her son-in-law.

The attack is believed by her to be linked to a dispute within the traveller community.

The trio, a man aged 20, together with a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old were being questioned about the attack in the Suffolk Road area in the west of the city last night.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said a 60-year-man, 55-year-old woman and the girl had been uninjured in the attack. However the woman and girl needed hospital treatment for severe shock.

The Audi was found burned out a short distance away in the Glenside Road area soon afterwards.

Police investigating a motive for the attack appealed for anyone who saw the shooting or saw the car being abandoned and torched to contact them.

The men arrested were being held at the PSNI Serious Crime Suite in Antrim.

Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast Sue Ramsey condemned the attack.

"This shooting was wrong and the continued attacks against Ms Mongan, her family, or indeed any other family in the Travelling community need to stop. What we could be dealing with as a result of this attack is the death of a woman or a young girl who were in the house at the time," she said.
