Two men in their 20s were killed in separate road accidents over the weekend, bringing the death toll on Irish roads to 223 this year, 14 more than the number who had died in crashes by the end of the August bank holiday last year.
Mr Hayden Foster (21), Piltown, Co Kilkenny, died in a single vehicle accident after the car in which he was the front seat passenger left the road and over-turned in a field near the Tipperary/Kilkenny border. The accident happened just before 3 a.m. yesterday.
A 24-year-old man died following an accident involving a motorbike at Tombreen, Carnew, Co Wicklow, at around 6 p.m. on Saturday. He was a pillion passenger on the motorbike which went out of control and struck a ditch. The driver was taken to Wexford General Hospital with serious injuries.
Man charged after death of teenager
A 21-year-old man has been charged in relation to the death of a teenage father in Tallaght, Dublin, in the early hours of Friday morning.
Mr Jamie Keogh (17), Millbrook Lawns, died from a stab wound following a row on Donomore Avenue, Killinarden. He was the father of an 18-month-old child and his girlfriend is expecting another baby.
Gardaí arrested a 21-year-old on Friday morning, who was charged yesterday under Section Three of the Non-fatal Offences Against the Person Act. He is to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Thursday.
Counterfeit DVDs seized by gardai
Gardaí in Dublin have seized counterfeit DVDs with an estimated value of €250,000. The weekend seizure took place when a house on the South Circular Road was searched by members of the Anti-Racketeering Unit of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
One man is assisting gardaí with their enquiries.
Woman held after death of man
Detectives in Northern Ireland were yesterday granted another 36 hours to question a woman in connection with the death of a 47-year-old man near Belfast. The body of Mr Geordie McDowell was found in Rathcoole, Newtownabbey, Belfast.
Two held after sword attack
Two men in their early 20s were arrested yesterday in connection with two sword attacks in Co Down. The first incident happened in James Connolly Square, Newry, on Saturday night when a man was attacked. A short time later another man was attacked in Monaghan Street. Both victims received treatment in hospital for minor injuries.
Man overboard in Lough Sheelin
A search will resume this morning on Lough Sheelin, in Co Cavan for a man who fell overboard from a fishing vessel yesterday.
Local gardaí were alerted at 7.30 a.m. that a member of a fishing party had fallen from the boat. The Garda water unit and members of sub-aqua clubs carried out the search which had to be called off last night.
