Unconfirmed reports have claimed the two men who lost their lives were marshalls at the event. The incident occurred during stage two of the Shell Donegal International Rally when one of the cars left the road at Cloghan and collided with a group of onlookers.

The car had just traversed a humped-back bridge at high speed.

A number of injured were taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where two men were pronounced dead on arrival. A third is said to be in a critical condition while three others, believed to include the driver of the car, are said to be stable.
