Two Irish men were last night still in a critical condition in a hospital in Melbourne after allegedly being assaulted with a hammer in the early hours of Sunday morning.

David Greene and David Byas, who are both from Dublin, are in the intensive care unit of the Alfred

hospital in the Melbourne suburb  of Prahran. “Both remain critical at this stage,” a spokesman at the hospital told The Irish Times.

Mr Greene and Mr Byas were staying in temporary accommodation in the St Kilda East area of Melbourne when they were allegedly attacked by a man wielding a hammer at about 1am on Sunday.

They were taken to the nearby Alfred hospital and have been in intensive care since.
