Two people died in separate road crashes last night.

A 75-year-old woman died when the car in which she was a passenger collided with another car on the Castlemaine to Firies village road (R561) in Co Kerry. The incident happened at 10.45pm.

The drivers of both cars were taken to Tralee General Hospital where they are described as serious but stable.

The road is still closed off for a forensic collision examination and diversions are in place.

Witnesses are asked to contact gardaí in Killorglin on 066 9790500 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

A 41-year-old man died when his car collided with another car on the N81 at Hempstown, Blessington, Co Wicklow. The crash happened at about 8.30pm.

The man was taken to Naas General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the other car was also taken to Naas hospital with minor injuries. The scene of the crash has re-opened following an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.
