Two die in road accidents and rider killed at Ulster Grand Prix

A Scottish motorcyclist was killed at the weekend in a four-vehicle crash at the Ulster Grand Prix in Co Antrim. In the Republic, two people died in road accidents.

Mr Andy Wallace (24), who lived in Culloden, was killed instantly and three other riders were injured in the motorcycle accident at the Dundrod circuit on Saturday afternoon.

They and a spectator whose leg was broken, were taken to hospital for treatment.

An oil spillage was reported to be the cause of the accident, which happened during the first lap of the first race at the fast Wheeler's Corner. The race was suspended while medical personnel treated the casualties, but was subsequently restarted.

Gardaí in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, are investigating an accident in which a Lithuanian man was killed early on Saturday.

Mr Kestas Gebdminas (27), Shantonagh, Castleblayney, died after the car he was driving crashed through a hedge at Cabra Cross on the main Castleblayney-Shercock road, some time before 6 a.m. A male passenger in his 20s received minor injuries and was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth. There was no other vehicle involved. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

Gardaí are also appealing for witnesses to a single-vehicle crash, in which a man in his 20s was killed, near Swords, Co Dublin, on Saturday evening. The incident occurred at the junction of the M1 motorway and the N1 at Lissenhall at 6 p.m.

The man, who was from the Swords area, was thrown from his car after he lost control of the vehicle as he reached a roundabout after exiting the motorway.

The car somersaulted before crashing. The driver was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he died from his injuries. His name has not yet been released.

Gardaí at Ballyfermot, meanwhile, have named the woman who died following a collision with a motorcycle at Ballyfermot Road on Friday. She was Ms Violet Harris (52) from Donnybrook, Dublin.
