Ankara - The Turkish Prime Minister, Mr Bulent Ecevit, said yesterday he thought an Islamist deputy could not remain a member of parliament after she was said to have taken US citizenship.

The Virtue Party deputy, Ms Merve Kavakci, became the subject of investigations by prosecutors and electoral authorities after she caused uproar by entering the officially secularist parliament in a Muslim headscarf.

Turkey's foreign ministry yesterday circulated US documents appearing to show that Ms Kavakci had taken US citizenship about a week after her application to stand in Turkey's April 18th general elections was accepted.
