Tullow Oil said this morning hydrocarbons were found in the Kingfisher-1A well in Block 3A in Uganda.

Tullow owns a 50 per cent stake in the project, while operator Heritage Oil Corp owns the other 50 per cent.

"Hydrocarbons in three zones totalling approximately 40 metres have been encountered in the Kingfisher-1A well," said Tullow, quoting a statement from Heritage Oil.

They were found in the deeper section of the well at around 2,260-2,370 metres. The hole will be drilled further to up to 4,000 metres over the next 45 days.

Kingfisher-1A is a sidetrack well to Kingfisher-1, which in November flowed up to 4,120 barrels of oil a day.
