The leaders of North's power-sharing executive are heading to Washington for meetings with senior figures in President George W. Bush's administration.

First Minister Mr David Trimble and Deputy First Minister Mr Mark Durkan are due to brief Ms Condoleeza Rice of the National Security Council at the White House on the peace process and devolution.

They will also meet President Bush's special adviser on Northern Ireland, Mr Richard Haass.

It is hoped the Mr Durkan and Mr Trimble will meet US Secretary of State Mr Colin Powell.

Sinn Féin's Mr Martin McGuinness is due to arrive in New York for a brief visit following party leader Mr Gerry Adams's visit to the city.
