Tralee's 'final' meeting falls foul of weather

Racing: This afternoon's final meeting at Tralee has been abandoned due to waterlogging. The track is expected to close for good following today's seven-race card but heavy rain has put paid to chances of a proper farewell.

Irish Turf Club spokesman Cliff Noone said: "Torrential overnight rain in Tralee has left parts of the track waterlogged and they have had to cancel their meeting."

There remains some uncertainty over whether it will be the last fixture held at Ballybeggan Park or if racing will continue.

"It's still all up in the air," said Tralee chairman Paddy Barry earlier in the week. "The shareholders will hold an agm soon and decide if they want to keep it open as a racecourse or if they want to leave it as a big field."

A property consortium's plans to redevelop the site were substantially turned down by An Bord Pleannala this summer, which encouraged hopes among many that racing could be saved at Tralee.
