At the request of the family, gardai have not released the names of the mother and child who were killed when they were struck by a train on the Dublin-Belfast line near Donabate, Co Dublin, on Monday.

The bodies of the woman, aged between 35 and 40, and her 18-month-old daughter, were brought to Beaumont Hospital, where relatives last night gathered for a special prayer service. They were identified by the woman's father at the hospital yesterday. A joint funeral is expected to take place later this week. The woman, who had a career in education but had not worked for some time, lived in Swords with her husband, daughter and seven-year-old son.
