Colombo - Two days of torrential rains in Sri Lanka have left five people dead and thousands homeless, officials said yesterday.

State radio said nearly 200,000 people had been displaced by floods and landslides, half of them in the Colombo district. It said the water level in many rivers was rising fast and authorities were evacuating people to safe places.
