Gardaí investigating the incident, at 2.30pm yesterday, said the child fell about four metres on to a pavement.

It happened during a bank holiday party attended by locals and visitors at an apartment in Distillery Court, beside Sligo Abbey and close to Sligo town centre.

Gardaí said they did not believe the boy suffered life- threatening injuries. A spokesperson for Sligo General Hospital, where the child was detained, declined to give details of his condition.

The Health Service Executive was notified and one other unrelated child was taken into care.
