Irish aid worker Margaret Hassan, who was abducted in Baghdad on October 19th, 2004, is to be posthumously awarded the 2004 Tipperary International Peace Prize.
The Tipperary Peace Convention is honouring the Dubliner for "her tireless work for the Iraqi people over 30 years, which she dedicated to the poor and vulnerable in her adopted country".
Mr Martin Quinn of the peace convention said: "Her love for the Arabs started in the 1960s when she worked in the Palestinian camps, living with the poorest of the poor and supporting refugees.
"As country director of Care International for Iraq, she assisted more than 17 million Iraqis and she showed extraordinary courage, tenacity and commitment in her concern for those living in the most difficult of circumstances."
The award will be presented at the Tipperary Peace Festival in April. Previous winners of the award include Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, Bob Geldof and Senator George Mitchell.
